synopsis:

Dabbawala Transnational’ presents the reality of delivery riders around the world. This feature documentary consists of three short documentaries, three separate short films combined into one comprehensive exploration of the life of ‘Dabbawalas’ worldwide, focusing on work, migration, equity, sustainability, and climate change. We mainly focus on people coming to the global North from India on study visas who need to work while studying, usually under tough conditions. With 1.45 billion inhabitants, India has the second largest population in the world and is expected to become the most populous by 2030. According to our conversations with Indian delivery riders in Berlin, many young people are planning to move from this South Asian country to Europe and North America and Australia. According to the ‘World Migration Report 2024’: “India is also the origin of the largest number of international migrants in the world (nearly 18 million.” Our documentary explores this global phenomenon through the everyday stories of our protagonists. We aim to formulate salient questions, rather than forcing easy and convenient answers.

Jennifer Hosek (A professor of Transnational German Studies, I work on petro-critical urban mobility and community. ‘Dabbawala Transnational’ is a team effort. And, it’s related to my research project ‘Occupying Motion: Visual Culture and Community in Market Times,’ inspired by the global Occupy Movement. ‘Rodando en La Habana: bicycle stories’ with Jaime Santos Menéndez is another part of the project) est à l’origine de ce projet, tout comme elle avait lancéRodando en La Habana: bicycle stories’.
